African Affairs Committee

OUR MISSION

The African Affairs Committee’s (AAC) mission is to forge a high-level relationship between young professionals in New York City interested in Africa with the United Nations and the United Nations Association and to increase the visibility of the United Nations’ current initiatives in Africa within this group.

"Sustainability for All" Initiatives in Africa Panel Discussion
What: The African Affairs Committee of UNA-SNY Young Professionals hosted a panel discussion on "Sustainable Energy for All" initiatives in Africa on June 26, 2012. Representatives of the UN Foundation, Kenyan Mission, as well as academics, social entrepreneurs and NGOS active on the continent spoke about recent sustainable energy initiatives in Africa.

- Aneri Patel, Senior Associate, Energy Access at the United Nations Foundation
- David Berger, SociaLite solar lighting system, Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York

African Affairs Committee Winter Happy Hour
What: The AAC hosted a happy hour event with drink and food specials, where attendees met Board of the African Affairs Committee, heard about exciting upcoming 2012 events, mingled with other members, and networked with professionals from the global affairs field.
When: March 1, 2012, 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

African Affairs Committee Holiday Dinner
What: The AAC held a holiday dinner with committee members, volunteers from the Gala, and members, which served as an opportunity for volunteers to meet current AAC committee members and learn more about the AAC in an informal manner.
When: December 12, 2011, 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Friends of Africa 2011 Benefit Gala – “Innovation in Africa”
What: AAC held the 3rd annual Friends of Africa Benefit Gala. The evening, celebrating “Innovation in Africa” honored Kennedy Odede, President & CEO of Shining Hope, a non-profit founded amidst the same Kibera slum highlighted in the February film screening.  The Gala also featured a keynote address by Patrick Hayford, Director of the United Nations Office of the Special Adviser on Africa, a presentation by Adele Waugaman of the United Nations Foundation highlighting its Technology Partnership’s successes in Africa. In addition, a portion of the proceeds was donated to the UN Foundation's Nothing But Nets, a global, grassroots campaign to raise awareness and funding to combat malaria.

CUNY Young African Leadership Symposium
What: AAC co-sponsored the CUNY Young African Leadership Symposium. The Symposium recalled the dynamic young leaders who led the independence movement and aimed to provide a platform to challenge and encourage the next generation of African leadership to rise to the occasion in this generation.
When: September 16 – 17, 2011

"Good Fortune" Film Screening
What: AAC held a screening of the film “Good Fortune”, a documentary film by Landon Van Soest and Jeremy Levine. “Good Fortune” offered a critical look at the unintended consequences of massive international efforts to alleviate poverty in Africa including a UN project to relocate slum dwellers in the largest Kenyan Slum called Kibera. After the movie, YP membership shared reactions to the film during a discussion led by AfAC and film Co-Producer Jeremy Levine. The event was also attended by representatives from the Permanent Observer Mission of the African Union to the United Nations.
