Earthquake Disaster in Haiti

Sympathies and condolences of the Division and its people go out to the country of Haiti, whose people are suffering from the aftermath of a 7.0 earthquake near the capital, Port-au-Prince.The devastation is massive, in a country with few resources to rebuild.  International aid will have to provide a lifeline for months and years as well as future development.

We grieve the loss of thousands of Haitians, and also of UN Peacekeepers and other UN staff who were seriously injured or died. Without heavy equipment and related expertise, ordinary Haitians and the peacekeepers alike are left to rescue by hand those who are alive.  Water is critically short, and aid efforts will concentrate on providing food, water and shelter.

The Division's YPIC group, which mounted The Haiti Expedition Project last year, has acted quickly to solicit donations for work with the Expedition Project's partners, with which it worked in the fall. The link is:

Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference Scheduled for Friday, February 19, 2010 at the UN

Save the Date!  A Year of Crisis: Opportunities for Change -- the Second Annual Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference and UN Members Day, will be held on Friday, February 19, 2010 at the United Nations.  USA-USA Members are welcome.  Feel free to bring a friend to this FREE of CHARGE event.  Registration is required and will be available soon at www.unausa.org

Welcome to 2010-2011 Officers and Directors

At its meeting on December 14, 2009, the Southern New York State Division welcomed officers and elected new directors for the 2010-2011 board.  Officers were elected earlier at the Division's Annual Meeting in October.  Division leadership now includes: 

Officers: Jeanne Betsock Stillman, President; Catherine D. White, Vice President; Marcia Brewster, Vice President; Margaret Shannon, Secretary and Lee H. Bloom, Treasurer. 

Directors:  Past Division Presidents Margaret K. Bruce and David Cockroft and Current Chapter President John C. Sweeney (New York): Phil Reynolds (Westchester); Gabriel Levitt (Brooklyn); Alonzo Shockley (Suffolk). The former are automatic board members according to the by-laws.  Directors re-elected at the meeting are: Hope S. Miller, David Stillman, Patricia Sacristan, George Garland, Lester Wilson, Joan A. Levy, Oneater Sinclair and Michelle Chaplin.

UN Foundation Honors Congresswoman Nita Lowey

On December 7, Kathy Bushkin Calvin of the UN Foundation joined Cecile Richards (President, Planned Parenthod Federation of America); Reina Schiffrin (President, PP Hudson Peconic); and Dr. Gill Greer (Director General, International Planned Parenthood Federation), to present Congresswoman Nita Lowey with the first International Family Planning Hero Award.  Lowey has been a staunch supporter of women's reproductive rights, and of the UN Population Fund and other support for familiy planning services and education internationally. 

Noema Chaplin (UNA Queens), Brenda Smith (UNA Westchester) and Jeanne Betsock Stillman (UNA Southern NY State Division and Westchester Chapter), attended.  Photos are available in the Event Image Gallery.
