The Latin American & Caribbean Affairs Committee (LACAC) regularly maintains this page to bring you news, information, and resources about the LAC region.

Our Mission
The LAC Committee provides an interactive forum for our members and the NYC community-at-large to discuss issues and opportunities pertaining to the region. Our primary areas of focus include poverty eradication, international trade, politics, economic development, environmental conservation and social policy.
We accomplish our mission by organizing educational, career-oriented and cultural programs focused on the Latin American and Caribbean region of the world. Working collaboratively with foundations and non-profit organizations, we sponsor events that facilitate discussion among experts in the field and interested members of the community. We also hope to connect our members within the New York City metropolitan area with colleagues in Latin American and Caribbean countries.
LAC Programs 2011-2012
LAC E-Pal Network: Build your network by developing relationships with young professionals in the Latin American and Caribbean region of the world. To join the network, please email us at YPlatinamerica@unasouthernny.org .
Café con Leche: Join us for Spanish- and Portuguese-language conversation practice for speakers at the introductory and intermediate levels.
Girl Up: We support Girl Up, a campaign of the United Nations Foundation, which gives American girls the opportunity to channel their energy and compassion to raise awareness and funds for programs of the United Nations that help some of the world’s hardest-to-reach adolescent girls. Girl Up’s LAC outreach efforts currently target young women in Guatemala.
Global Alliance for Clean Cook Stoves: The Global Alliance for Clean Cook Stoves, another campaign of the United Nations Foundation, is a public-private initiative to save lives, improve livelihoods, empower women, and combat climate change by creating a thriving global market for clean and efficient household cooking solutions. The Alliance hopes to surpass its “100 by ’20” target by working to provide 100 clean cook stoves across Latin America, Asia and Africa by the year 2020. One of the Alliance’s focal countries is Haiti where severe depletion of the forest due to charcoal production and firewood utilisation is causing soil erosion, limiting agricultural possibilities and increasing the risk of landslides and floods during storms and hurricanes.
